TRANSCO CLSG attends World Power Conference

Within the framework of the CLSG interconnection project implementation, and as part of the need for staff to strengthen their knowledge in engineering best practices and new approaches in network design and implementation, a two-man TRANSCO CLSG team will attend this year’s International power conference for large electrical networks to be held in Paris, France from August 21 to the 25th.

The Director of Project Implementation Unit, Mr. Etienne Bailly along with the Engineering Coordinator, Erik Achi will attend this year’s world power conference. The team will participate in series of technical workshops that will focus on topics particularly related to the CLSG project activities, including design and operation issues such as Eco design of equipment, Maintenance and Real Time monitoring of system and coordination between Transmission System Operators (TSOs).

The CIGRE’s 46th General Session, which TRANSCO CLSG is attending for the first time, is an international conference on large high-voltage electric systems that will attract thousands of senior executives, engineers and experts from the worldwide power industry. The increasing importance and popularity of this biennial event for transmission and distribution industry professionals has already resulted in record numbers of technical contributions, delegates and exhibitors registering for the upcoming August conference.

The conference will be held at the Palais des Congrés, situated in northwest Paris, France. The CIGRE 2016 will present the range of new technologies that have been developed to accommodate renewable energy projects. The design and commissioning of large extra-high-voltage transmission interconnections continues to increase as high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) technologies now enable circuits to operate at higher voltages over longer distances to optimize system capacity and facilitate international-based energy marketing.

The electricity industry is facing some of its largest challenges as the demand for economic, reliable and secure supply of electrical energy continues to increase at a time when the generation is increasingly dependent on renewable energy resources.

Faced with the now established environmental issues of climate change, the decline in fossil-fuel generation and the safety concerns linked to nuclear power generation, the industry requires new technologies to accommodate generation from renewable energy resources.

Therefore, CIGRE 2016 offers a unique learning opportunity for industry professionals including the TRANSCO CLSG team as well as next-generation of engineers entering the industry.

The four main strategic directions for CIGRE technical activities include the Electrical Power System of the Future: super grids, smart grids, making best use of the existing power system, focus on environment and sustainability and communication on power system issues to the audience.
